How We Test Gear
Our gear recommendations come from real jewelry and product photography work, not spec sheets alone. Here is how we evaluate what we recommend.
What we look at
- Color accuracy: how truthfully the gear renders gold, silver, and gemstone color.
- Detail and sharpness: how well fine settings, facets, and hallmarks resolve.
- Reflection control: how easy the gear makes it to manage glare on polished metal.
- Reliability and ease of use: how it holds up across long studio sessions.
- Value: performance relative to price, across budget tiers.
How we score
Where we give a rating, we break it into categories so you can weigh what matters to you, rather than trusting a single number. A piece of gear that scores high on color but lower on value may still be the right pick for a luxury catalog, and the reverse for a high-volume Etsy seller.
